Post Will Kismac ever support N?
With there being more and more N networks out there, I am wondering if there is any considering of supporting scanning for N networks on both 2.4 ghz and 5 ghz bands? (Actually, I would think it would find them on 2.4 ghz as routers drop back to b/g for clients as needed.)

Patches welcomed.

And good luck finding a network that isn't backwards-compatible with 802.11g out in the wild, or at least one that an 802.11g sniffer can't detect.

What about a 5ghz only N network-that wouldn't be sniffed. Can current versions of Kismac indicate which 2.4ghz networks are actually N, or do they all look like G? It's been a while since I updated KisMac, not being a frequent user.

OK, I've just tested KisMAC with the only AP I have access to that is capable of N-only operation. Test setup includes a custom built checkout of r353 (current svn) and an rt2570 (crappiest stick that isn't AirPort Extreme, crappiest KisMAC USB driver); Apple Time Capsule operating as an AP only.

With the AP set to either "802.11n (802.11b/g compatible)" or "802.11n only (2.4 GHz)," the AP is found by KisMAC. Nothing obvious indicated which mode it was operating in, though. The only thing I didn't sift through were the broadcast packets; perhaps there might be something in there.

With the AP set to either "802.11n (802.11a compatible)" or "802.11n only (5 GHz)," the poor little rt2570 was unable to detect the AP at all.

Unfortunately, I don't have the time (or free system memory) to wait for my Aircrack-ng VM to fire up, so I can't tell you what Kismet or airodump-ng have to say with any of my various USB chipsets. I'm sorry to say that KisMAC is still very far behind the rest of the world as far as development goes; I'm not holding my breath for anything to change significantly at this point. Of course, if some new development blood were to show up and get involved....

I am going to shift the subject a little, so, please, forgive me in advance.

I would love to help, unfortunately, I can't even patch my own socks. My coding knowledge is below freezing and by the time I learn, WPA 99 will be in place.
I perfectly understand the concept of Freeware and open source, unfortunately again, everything has a cost.
I would not be against seeing a banner or two on this forum or on KisMAC-ng to help pay for (some) help, an Amazon affiliate link for the Hardware or similar.
It will surely not be much, but could provide some relief, or help a dev with a latte or three.
If the Dev is stuck, KisMAC will probably have a slow death, and I love this little devil.

If Fish or Alchemyxthunder could reply, I would greatly appreciate.
TIA

This would be a shame and I am not aware of any other GPS enabled network scanners for Mac wardriving, let alone any that would be more modern in terms of detecting the newer types of networks and indicating their type accurately. Unfortunately, I myself, am not prepared to be involved in any development on Kismac.

Somewhat more important is someone to give the money to.

Kismet is on both counts. But we've drifted off topic now; feel free to start a new topic if you want to continue these discussions.

In other news, compat-wireless just released 2.6.35_rc1 which DOES include a functional driver that supports the Rockland N3 card; suspected actual chipset is rt3572, though the driver controlling the card is rt2800usb. Support can be had for Pentoo users with the ability to update an install.

The to reminds me of the "who was first, the chicken or the egg" story.

I am stopping this "public" conversation right now and I'll switch to PM. After, you'll decide what and how to do it, if any.
You are an Admin, I am just a "client".
Best Rgds
